The M.A. subject East Asian Studies (OAW) can only be studied in the single-subject model. It builds on a relevant degree in Japanese Studies, Korean Studies or Sinology, and appropriate knowledge of an East Asian language at B.A. level is required.

Students choose a core area that essentially corresponds to the content of the M.A. two-subject degree programs in Japanese Studies, Korean Studies or Sinology. All further coursework is completed in the so-called supplementary area, where students may learn a further East Asian foreign language and complete further courses from the Faculty of East Asian Studies, courses from other faculties, an internship or a stay abroad. The standard period of study is four semesters.
