The M.A. subject Japanese Studies can only be studied in the two-subject model, i.e. it is combined with another subject from this model that is not offered by the Faculty of East Asian Studies. Students who wish to complete further East Asian Studies courses in addition to focusing on Japanese Studies can choose the M.A. East Asian Studies (OAW) in the single-subject model. The standard period of study in both cases is four semesters.

Admission requirements are a relevant B.A. degree with knowledge of modern Japanese at level B1-B2 and knowledge of English at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Within the degree program, it is possible to focus either on Japanese history or on Japanese linguistics, according to which the choice of courses is determined.
