Since autumn 2022, the department of East Asian Politics has been cooperating with the Otto Pankok School, a gymnasium in the city of Mülheim an der Ruhr (https://otto-pankok-schule.de/). Together we organise a China Study Group, which is sponsored by the Bildungsnetzwerk China e.V., Berlin (https://bildungsnetzwerk-china.de/).
The teaching of foreign languages and cultures has a long tradition at the Otto Pankok School. In addition, many of the pupils grow up with several languages and also have the opportunity to start Latin from the fifth grade at this school. In order to give younger pupils in particular an introduction to the fascinating world of China and East Asia and to provide highly talented young people with targeted individual support, pupils in grades 5-8 meet voluntarily once a week for a ‘China Study Group’. Here they learn characters and important phrases, explore cultures and societies online, discuss with PhD students and students from the Faculty of East Asian Studies and learn about regional foods, sports and games.
Pupils help to determine the programme, work in a multimedia and self-determined way and reflect on their own experience of the world by engaging with East Asian civilisations. A particular focus of the China Study Group is the promotion of curiosity and individual interests, intercultural competence and the promotion of diversity.
