Korean Studies

Welcome to the homepage of Korean Studies at Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB). The Department of Korean Studies offers a multifaceted and in-depth Korean Studies program. We seek to enable our students to comprehend and study the rich cultural, literary, philosophical and religious history and heritage of Korea, while at the same time we aim to equip them with skills that allow them to plunge headfirst into the waves of modern Korea.

Our curriculum is based on intensive language education, and although it primarily centers on Modern Korean, it includes special introductions to Middle Korean and Literary Chinese (the scriptura franca in premodern East Asia), as well as a sound training in philological methods, which puts students in a position to conduct Korean Studies more versatilely and with broader vision in an East Asian context. Hence, students of Korean Studies at RUB will obtain a wide array of indispensable tools, knowledge and perspectives to study, understand and enjoy Korea in all its richness and diversity.
