The two-year M.A. program, Korean Studies can again be combined with a second major, but also be taken as a single major as the East Asian Studies master with a Korea focus. In the latter case, an additional East Asian language has to be acquired during the first year. Courses offered in the M.A. program are often related to ongoing research and are geared towards conveying techniques for independent academic work in Korean Studies.

Focus of the courses in both master programs is on topics related to literature, history and the intellectual history of Korea. The range of classes enables to develop an individual research focus, especially within the subject areas mentioned above. The M.A. course in Korean Studies comprises of a study period of three semesters and a fourth semester for writing a master's thesis.

Aim of the Master program is to systematically expand and deepen knowledge of Korean and Korean Studies as well as to expand linguistic and methodological skills. Scientific methods are comprehensivly applied and communication skills, such as argumentation and presentation are further developed. In addition, classes are mostly based on Korean-language sources and texts. The master's thesis is intended to demonstrate the ability to carry out independent scientific research.
