Andreas Seifert studied Chinese Studies and Political Science from 1988 to 2007 in Tübingen and Beijing (北京大学). He focuses on contemporary Chinese history with a special emphasis on the Cultural Revolution (M.A. in 1997) and the development of Chinese comic books (Dissertation 2007).
His research is mainly concerned with the development of the Chinese graphic tradition during the 20th century. In his dissertation on Chinese comic books (连环画), he analyzed the aesthetic qualities of these texts against the background of political attempts to utilize comic books for political and educational purposes. He acted as a co-curator of a major comic-exhibition at the Cartoon Museum Basel in 2010/11. Parts of his extensive collection of Chinese comics have been digitally incorporated into the database held at the research cluster “Asia and Europe in a Global Context” at Heidelberg University (Asia Europe). Chinese propaganda posters have also been in the focus of his research. In 2017/18 he participated in a student undergraduate research and exhibition project of Prof. Moll-Murata at the Section “History of China” at Ruhr University Bochum (Sozialistisches Paradies). Future research on this topic will be pursued in collaboration with RUB and the Amsterdam International Institute of Social History.
Andreas Seifert’s interest in the PRC’s foreign and security policies is centered on recent developments within the Chinese security apparatus. His contributions to this field of research touch upon a variety of topics such as the build-up of the People’s Armed Police and the conflicts in the South China Sea.
This interest in peace and security studies is also reflected in his position as head of the editorial board of the journal “Wissenschaft & Frieden” (link) and his membership on the executive board of the Tübingen based “Informationsstelle Militarisierung (IMI) e.V.” (link). Both institutions are aimed at working as a transmitter between the academy and society. Since 2001 he has also worked as a tour guide for study tours to China.
