WELCOME

The Department of Chinese Language and Literature offers a wide range of courses on the languages, literatures and cultures of China. A focus of both teaching and research is on literature, philology and linguistics, with research projects on the historical semantics of Classical Chinese, ancient Chinese documents, pre-modern Chinese literature and the literature of the People’s Republic of China. The Department also provides most of the language and reading courses in Modern Chinese, which are compulsory for students of the Bachelor’s programme in East Asian Economics and Politics, as well as the training in Classical Chinese. Attached to the Department are the Richard Wilhelm Translation Centre, the Centre for the Study of Traditional Chinese Cultures (CSTCC, Zhongguo Chuantong Wenhua Yanjiu Zhongxin 中國傳統文化研究中心), and the Research Unit for Taiwanese Culture and Literature.
