Born 1967 in Laer, Steinfurt district. Studied Sinology, History and English Language and Literature at Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Bonn and Sichuan University in Chengdu. 2001–2009 Research Associate at the University of Bonn. 2005 Doctorate in Sinology at the University of Bonn. 2009–2010 Teacher of Chinese and English at Geschwister-Scholl-Gesamtschule in Dortmund. 2010–2016 Research Associate at the University of Bonn. 2014 Habilitation in Sinology at Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster. 2014–2015 Interim professor at the Department of Sinology, University of Münster. Since July 2016 head of the subproject "Securing Sovereignty through Consensus: the Institutionalization of Criticism in China from Antiquity to the Early Imperial Era" (details in German only) as part of the Collaborative Research Centre 1167 "Power and Rulership – premodern configurations in a transcultural perspective" (details in German only), funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), at the University of Bonn. Since October 2016 Chair Professor for Chinese Language and Literature at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum; since January 2019 Principal Investigator in the Cluster of Excellence no. 2036, "Beyond Slavery and Freedom: Asymmetrical Dependencies in Pre-Modern Societies", funded by the DFG, and Member of the Bonn Center for Dependency and Slavery Studies (BCDSS); 2019–2021 Dean of the Faculty of East Asian Studies.
