With the participation of the Department of Japanese History, the following excursions have been offered so far as part of the studies at RUB.
Research-based study trip (11 - 23 September 2025)
The RUB summer school “Manchuria in the Museum” was a study trip with advanced students of East Asian Studies, History, and Public History, which took place in northeastern China under the direction of Dr. Anke Scherer and Prof. Sören Urbansky. The aim of the trip was to examine the presentation of Manchuria’s history, which is marked by Russian and Japanese influences, and in particular how these conflicts are presented today in museums and memorial sites. The participants created a web blog (in German) to document their findings.
Excursion to Japan as part of a RUB summer school (20 May - 1 June 2026)
The study trip, led by Dr. Anke Scherer and Prof. Sören Urbansky, will include workshops with Japanese students in addition to exploring relevant locations in Hokkaidō (Hakodate, Shiraoi, Asahikawa, Abashiri, Sapporo). Thematically, the study trip will deal with the history of Russian-Japanese relations, focusing on the “frontier” region of Hokkaidō, the colonial development of the island, and the treatment of the region’s indigenous culture.
